Second grade completed the final stage of their Tree of Life paintings by adding warm or cool colors to the background of their trees. In art we learned that color is used to evoke mood. Students chose their colors based on feeling, emotion, and time of year. Warm colors reminded us of summer and left us feeling warm and excited. While cool colors reminded us of winter and left us feeling calm and relaxed.
Inspiration for this lesson came from Gustav Klimt’s famous Tree of Life painting. My second graders were excited to use gold tempera paint and neon liquid watercolors. They once again amazed me with their technique and skills.
